Meggitt Sensing Systems’ facility renews ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates

Rugby, Warwickshire –– Meggitt Sensing Systems’ facility in Rugby, UK, a leader in the design and manufacture of ignition systems for gas turbines, petrochemical installations, and industrial burners, has earned ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 recertification after passing two stringent audits. The ISO 9001:2008 quality management standards are recognized throughout the world. ISO 14001:2004 certification is an internationally recognized standard indicating a company has mitigated its environmental risks.

The ISO 9001 standards, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), set specific criteria for establishing and documenting a quality management system. A certificate is valid for three years and then must be renewed. The facility in Rugby was originally certified in 1993 and passed its three-year renewal audit in September of 2009. The renewed certification was awarded by Intertek Systems Certification based upon Meggitt Sensing Systems’ (MSS) ability to demonstrate, not only that it had documented quality management principles and procedures, but also that it operates according to them.

Also published by the ISO, the standards of ISO 14001 require a company to analyze the impact it has on the environment, establish processes to improve its environmental impact, and ensure ongoing review and compliance with all environmental requirements. The certification shows MSS’s commitment to the environment and dedication to reviewing the effect of the facility’s operations on the global community. Certification by Intertek Systems Certification ensures a company has effectively implemented all ISO 14001 requirements. Registration is valid for three years, subject to annual audits by the registrar, and must be fully reviewed and renewed every three years. The Rugby facility was originally certified in 2004 and has just passed its three-year renewal audit.

The facility’s quality and environmental policies have enabled continual improvement programs to be established. “The ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certifications ensure that we continually minimize our environmental impact and adhere to our rigorous quality control processes,” said Mark Billing, Industrial Sales Manager for MSS. “Given the customers we serve, particularly those in power generation, we understand how important it is to demonstrate real commitment to these processes.”

Although ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications are voluntary, both are a requirement for Meggitt companies. MSS’s certification is in line with Meggitt PLC’s quality control requirement and company-wide philosophy towards corporate responsibility and environment protection. Strict quality and environmental standards are applied to Meggitt operations worldwide and guide the entire organization.

Siemens uses Vibro-Meter to protect and remotely monitor the world's most powerful gas turbine

Siemens has chosen Vibro-Meter to provide the monitoring system for the SGT5-8000H, the world's most powerful gas turbine with a 340MW simple cycle power output. Our integrated solution includes dynamic pressure sensors (CP), as well as relative and absolute vibration sensors (CA and TQ) and a VM600 protection & condition monitoring system.

“Irsching 4” near Ingolstadt (Germany) is the test power
plant for the new SGT5-8000H, which is the world’s most
powerful gas turbine (GT) with a 340MW simple cycle
power output. The GT was first fired in December 2007.
After an 18-month trial operation period, it will be
expanded to become a 530 MW combined cycle power
plant (CCPP) and will be handed-over by Siemens to
E.ON for commercial operation in 2011.

This technologically leading CCPP will achieve an
efficiency of 60%, which is a new world record. As a
result, it will emit approximately 40000 tons of CO2 per
year less than comparable existing plants.

Monitoring vibrations and GT’s combustion is a proven
way to contribute to reliable GT operation, with the
target of reaching the highest possible efficiency and
lower emissions. Siemens has chosen Vibro-Meter to
provide the monitoring system for the SGT5-8000H.
Our integrated solution includes dynamic pressure
sensors (CP), as well as relative and absolute vibration
sensors (CA and TQ) and a VM600 protection &
condition monitoring system.

All data collected by the VM600 are continuously
transferred to Siemens’ Intranet, interfaced with their
Win_TS system (a global networked plant diagnostic
platform). With these tools, experts working in Siemens’
Diagnostic Centres (Erlangen and Orlando) and
Research-and-Engineering Centres (Erlangen, Berlin,
Muelheim, Orlando and others) can for example remotely
calculate balancing for turbines located in plants all over
the world. Using this information, staff on-site can balance
a turbine without the need for an on-site visit by experts,
saving time and cost.

Vibro-Meter is proud to contribute to Siemens’ leadingedge
technology and their outstanding support to
customers.
